Translating Zine

In order to translate Zine you have to have a working Zine development instance. As you're working on translations you will have to check out the zine-0.1 branch.

The general procedure for translating looks like this:

1. Extracting Messages

Strings in Zine change on a regular basis. New one appear, mistakes are fixed. So make sure to extract the new strings every once in a while:

$ ./scripts/extract-messages

2. Updating Translations

To update the translations after you extracted new messages use the following command:

$ ./scripts/update-translations

This will automatically update the translations with the latest strings extracted in step 1.

3. Create New Translations

If you want to create a new translation for a language that does not exist yet use the add-translation script:

$ ./scripts/add-translation LANGUAGE_CODE

Replace LANGUAGE_CODE with the letter code of the language.

4. Translating

Translating is pretty simple. Inside zine/i18n you have folders for each language with a messages.po file in. This is a regular po file you can either open with any text editor or a dedicated translation tool. You can also translate the plugin's metadata.txt files into your language (like this one: eric_the_fish/metadata.txt). Please make sure that the translations are sorted alphabetically by language identifier.

We recommend PoEdit which runs on Windows, Linux and OS X.

Once you're happy with the progress you've made, check in your changes. Once you're ready to share your translation upload the translation as hg bundle or patch to the trac.
